Actually, We Don’t Need To Grow the Economy

Dayton Martindale wrote a great introduction to Degrowth in a December piece in In These Times.

Martindale keeps it short and very sweet. He notes that a “managed decline in total GDP, with less work and consumption and more time for community, leisure and political engagement, might lead to an overall healthier society.” He lightly touches the tradeoffs between equity, sustainability, and growth’ and notes that an overall slowdown in the rate of growth does not mean that there will not still be growing sectors, like, perhaps solar panels. Finally, he addresses the challenge of building a movement to shrink.
